Introduction:

This book anchors its research in the history of New China, examining the fundamental trajectory and developmental patterns of urban construction since the founding of the People's Republic through the lens of urban development. It offers a systematic, comprehensive analysis, showcasing the remarkable achievements in urban development over the past seven decades. The book is chronologically divided into three periods: the Tortuous Development Phase (1949–1978), the Rapid Growth Phase (1978–2011), and the New Urbanization Phase (2012–present).

The publication will provide critical theoretical support for Chinese cities to pursue sustainable urban development. It serves as a historical reference for cities at all levels to explore development pathways tailored to China's national conditions, regional contexts, and local realities in the new era. Furthermore, it offers a conceptual framework for building a livable, workable, and happy homeland that meets the needs of the Chinese people in the future.
