作者简介：

董立勃，山东荣成人，生长于新疆。出版长篇小说《白豆》《烈日》《米香》《暗红》《疏勒城》《可可托海往事》等二十余部，中短篇小说集八部及十四卷文集。曾获过多种文学奖项。多部小说被改编为影视作品。

Introduction:

In September 1938, in Dihua (Ürümqi), the capital of China’s far northwestern Xinjiang, 20-year-old Shang Qing and her lover Du Tao graduated from the Provincial Normal School. After Du Tao drunkenly cursed Sheng Shicai, the militarist governor of Xinjiang, an informant reported him, leading to his arrest and imprisonment in the remote Shichengzi Prison of Qitai County. Across from the prison lay the ancient village of Bulake, where the local gentry, Master Wu, pulled strings to arrange Shang Qing’s visit to Du Tao—on the condition that she teach at the village school. Later, he even secured Du Tao’s temporary "release" to work as a teacher. But their happiness was short-lived: another informant’s betrayal sent Du Tao back to prison. Who was the "informant"? Between victim and perpetrator, the line was perilously thin…

About the Author:

Dong Libo, born in Rongcheng, Shandong Province, grew up in Xinjiang. He is the author of over twenty full-length novels, including White Beans, Scorching Sun, Fragrant Rice, Dark Red, Shule Fortress, and Tales of Koktokay, as well as eight collections of short and medium-length fiction and a fourteen-volume anthology. His works have received numerous literary awards, and several of his novels have been adapted into films and television series.
