Introduction:
Authored by Professor Jia Wenhe—a distinguished disciple of Yuan Ke, China’s preeminent mythologist and the foremost authority on The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing)—this groundbreaking work culminates over three decades of dedicated research into Chinese mythology and the Shan Hai Jing.
Through a natural-historical lens, the book meticulously examines the flora of antiquity recorded in this legendary text, tracing their origins, nomenclature, and characteristics with rigorous historical analysis and scholarly interpretation. Drawing from extant manuscripts worldwide, it features nearly 600 rare hand-drawn botanical illustrations, painstakingly restored to revive the authentic imagery of ancient editions.
Rooted in textual evidence and enriched by interdisciplinary references, the volume vividly reconstructs the morphology, traits, and utilitarian significance of these mythical plants. Seamlessly interweaving text and visuals, it stands as a definitive compendium—a mystical yet earthy natural history of primordial botany, bridging the Shan Hai Jing’s enigmatic legacy with modern academic inquiry.
