Introduction:
This monograph offers a modern interdisciplinary examination of the intrinsic connection between Song Dynasty scholarship (Songxue) and poetic theory in Chinese intellectual history. Rejecting utilitarian approaches to classical literary criticism, the study focuses on establishing a self-contained analytical framework that synthesizes traditional literary theory with Song-era philosophy, religion, ethics, arts, political institutions, folk customs, natural environments, and ethnic interactions. Through this comprehensive approach, it reveals the rich socio-cultural dimensions embedded in Song poetic concepts while tracing their theoretical evolution. By elucidating the fundamental principles of Songxue, the work ultimately uncovers the shared conceptual foundation underlying both Song academic traditions and poetic aesthetics.
