Introduction:
This is a profound and culturally rich archival collection that carries significant historical weight. Through 50 original historical memoirs, photographs, diaries, and correspondences—each serving as a temporal snapshot—it vividly reconstructs the authentic life of a Western medical missionary family during the late Qing and Republican eras.
Focusing on the period between 1887 and 1950, the book documents a Western family's multifaceted experiences in China spanning medical practice, education, diplomatic engagements, and humanitarian aid. It poignantly reveals the intricate interweaving of missionary family narratives with modern Sino-foreign historical developments and the tides of their times. This work offers posterity a distinctive vantage point for examining that transformative period in Chinese history.
About the Author:
Cheng Fangyi is an Associate Professor at Sun Yat-sen University's Boya Honors College, where he supervises Ph.D. candidates in Chinese History. A Tsinghua University graduate with bachelor's and master's degrees in History and World History respectively, he earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania.
His scholarly work centers on two key areas: modern Sino-foreign cultural interactions and medieval northern ethnic history. Specifically, he investigates how foreign elements—including mythology, material culture, animals, deities, and even mythical creatures—were transformed, reinterpreted and assimilated into Chinese culture across different historical periods, tracing their reception history within China's cultural landscape.
